I study a General Conference talk every day, as part of my personal study time. I was thinking I should post my thoughts from the talks.
I just finished reading a great article from President Boyd
K. Packer about scripture study.
I need
to read 2 Timothy 3, Paul tells us about the last days. They are great warnings—I
can see them around our current times right now; they are being fulfilled.
However, in this same chapter he tells us where to find peace.
“Continue
thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of
whom thou hast learned them;
And
that from a child thou hast know the holy scriptures, which are able to make
thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ.”
·
“The scriptures hold the keys to spiritual
protection. They contain the doctrine and laws and ordinances that will bring
each child of God to a testimony of Jesus Christ as the Savior and Redeemer.”
·
“Make scripture reading a part of your regular
routine and the blessings will follow”
·
“Children taught an understanding of the
scriptures early in life will come to know the path they should walk and will
be more inclined to remain on that path. Those who stray will have the ability
to return and, with help, can find their way back”
** Yesterday I gave a talk in church (spoke with Bryan in
Singles Ward, as High Council assignment) about the attributes of Christ. One
is knowledge. I think we need to gain knowledge in the scriptures; especially
because that is where we read about the life of Christ. We can follow His
example and become like Him.
How do you hold Family Scripture Study at your house?
How do you encourage your children to have their own personal Scripture Study time?

Hi Soeur! I mean Donna!
I was frustrated a few years ago because we were always forgetting to read the scriptures as a family right after dinner like we had decided. So I came up with a plan that has worked ever since. I told our kids the plan, and they liked it.
When it was dinnertime, whoever remembered to get the scriptures out of the kitchen drawer (and then subsequently read them after dinner) didn't have to clear off their "10 things" after dinner. It gave them an incentive, and it's funny, but for the longest time, it was my youngest, the 6 year old, who remembered the most often, to the dismay of her older siblings.
Thanks for being an inspiration.
Donna, you are a great example to all of us. Dad and I read every night before he goes to bed. Each one of us take 1/2 a chapter and read it outloud. Boy, it has made a big difference in understanding when you read it outloud. You don't miss a thing.
Love to you, Mother
We hold scripture study in the morning before school. Unfortunately that often means that Rich doesn't get to join us. However, we've tried at night and there are too many things that get in the way and our boys are not as attentive! We let each of the boys take turns reading and we explain what is happening every few verses. We read about 1 page per day.
I have had a hard time finding motivation for William to have his own personal scripture study! I would love to know how you encourage your kids!
